Card Player – Some in North Carolina are considering letting a tribe within the borders of South Carolina make plans to open up a brand new casino in their state.
The potential agreement is being considered by the administration of North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, according to the Associated Press. The tribe is the Catawba Indian Nation.
If approved and then built, the casino would likely be located along Interstate 85 south of Kings Mountain. It would be in Cleveland County.
The tribe, however, is keeping mum on the potential project. A spokeswoman for the Catawbas denied that they are seeking to operate in North Carolina, the Associated Press reported.
Other officials in North Carolina are reportedly not interested in such a project.
Currently, the Cherokees operate a casino in Western North Carolina. It is a Harrah’s branded property. The group also runs a bingo facility in the state.
According to Wikipedia, the Catawba Indian Nation was terminated by the federal government in 1959, and then later reorganized. In 1973, it began its struggle to gain federal recognition. It accomplished this in 1993, also obtaining a $50-million settlement with the federal government and the state of South Carolina for its longstanding land claims. It was also officially recognized by the state of North Carolina in 1993. Its headquarters are at Rock Hill, South Carolina.
