New Jersey Regulates Fantasy Sports

New Jersey has joined the expanding list of US states that have passed legislation that allows and regulates daily fantasy sports (DFS). State Governor Chris Christie signed bill A-3532 yesterday (Thursday), after it was given approval by the Senate back in June. New Jersey becomes the 16th state in the US to legalise DFS within its borders. DFS operators will be subject to a tax rate of 10.5% on all revenue collected via activities in New Jersey. Citing the Office of Legislative Service, the New Jersey Law Journal has reported that legalised DFS could help generate up to $6.6m (€5.6m)…

Maine Regulates Fantasy Sports

Maine has become the 15th US state to legalise paid-for daily fantasy sports (DFS) contests. DFS is now classed as a ‘game of skill’ in Maine and operators that wish to offer such services in the state will need to have revenue of more than $100,000 (€84,700) and pay a licensing fee of $2,500. Other measures set out by the state include companies having to pay a tax rate of 10% on gross revenue in Maine, while DFS operators will not be able to offer contests on collegiate or other amateur events. In a statement published by the LegalSportsReport.com website,…

New Jersey Fantasy Sports Would Not be Regulated as Gambling

The clock is now ticking on Gov. Chris Christie officially signing A3532, a bill regulating daily fantasy sports (DFS) that was passed by the New Jersey Senate on Friday, June 30. The measure, which sailed through the chamber by a comfortable 29-6 margin, would tax DFS operators at a rate of 10.5 percent of gross revenues each quarter. Initial estimates are that the bill would net the Garden State approximately $6.6 million per year. If passed, the bill would classify DFS as a non-gambling game of skill, which means that its oversight would not fall to the Division of Gaming…

Indiana Hands Out 3 Fantasy Sports Licenses

The Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC) granted DraftKings, FanDuel and FantasyDraft the permission to operate in the state as the three companies had temporary licenses whilst waiting for a final resolution. Despite the good news for the three biggest operators in the country, thirteen companies suspended their business in the state after they didn’t apply to get a permanent license. All of them had temporary permissions, but Sara Tait, Executive Director of the Indiana Gaming Commission had announced that every party had plenty of notice that they should end operations in the state as of July 1. Companies that want to…

Fantasy Sports Now Legal in Vermont

Governor of Vermont, Phil Scott, has finally signed a bill that legalises and regulates daily fantasy sports (DFS) activity in the state. With this new approval, the number of states that offer DFS in the country rises to 12. Back in May, it was reported that Vermont had been approved by both the Senate and the House of Representatives and it only needed the signature to come into force. As news outlet Legal Sports Reports published recently, spokesperson for DraftKings and FanDuel said in a statement: “More than 100,000, and growing, fantasy sports fans can now breathe easy, as the…

Alabama Says “No” to Fantasy Sports

The tide never turned for a daily fantasy sports bill in Alabama. As a result, DraftKings, FanDuel and the rest of the paid-entry fantasy sports industry is likely to continue to stay out of the state for the foreseeable future. The Alabama legislature adjourned its session on Friday night. That adjournment did not come with a vote in the state Senate on a bill (H 354) that would have legalized and regulated paid-entry fantasy in the state. There had been action on the bill on Wednesday — including amendments — but the bill never came up for a vote. Given…
