Fantasy Sports are Gambling Says New York Judge

A judge in New York has ruled that fantasy sports are gambling, placing the industry in doubt for one of the biggest markets in the country. The Albany judge said that daily fantasy sports (DFS) should be illegal in the state. Acting Supreme Court Justice Gerald Connolly made the ruling on Friday in response to a lawsuit submitted by anti-gambling organizations, according to the Journal News. Connolly ruled that a law dating back to 2016 that allows DFS to operate is in violation of the gambling ban in the state constitution. The lawsuit was launched after the state’s lawmakers legalized…

How the Chicago White Sox Ruined Sports Betting

America’s distrust of sports betting can be traced to the night of 21 September 1919. That’s when several members of baseball’s Chicago White Sox met with gambling boss Arnold Rothstein in a New York hotel room to throw the following month’s World Series. The scandal that unraveled after the White Sox’s sluggish five-games-to-three loss to the Cincinnati Reds hurled into the fire the innocence of a nation and led to the appointment of baseball’s first commissioner: Kenesaw Mountain Landis. It also created a firm distaste for any implication that sports were somehow compromised. History forgets the eight players involved were…

Free Play Poker “Is Gambling” Says US Court

The Washington State Gambling Commission has tweeted that it has been receiving questions about free play poker sites, such as PokerStars, denying access to state residents. A recent ruling by Ninth Circuit of U.S. Court of Appeals stated that social casino games are illegal under the State of Washington’s existing gambling laws. It began back in 2015 after a woman lost over $1,000 in virtual chips. She sued Churchill Downs, the then-parent company of Big Fish Casino over the loss. Under Washington law, gambling is “risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance.” It all boils…

Disney and Gambling: Mickey Mouse Politics

Mickey is not a fan of casino gambling coming to the Sunshine State. Disney and gambling really don’t seem to mix. In fact, the House of Mouse hasn’t shied away from putting its money where its mouth is with its support of the committee backing a proposed ballot initiative that would limit gaming expansion. Disney Worldwide Services contributed another $575,000 to “Voters in Charge” last month, bringing its total support to $2.33 million since March. Disney is virtually the only major backer of the committee, too. Over its lifetime, Voters in Charge has brought in just $232,500 in monetary contributions…

Russian Search Engines to Block Gambling Listings

Russia’s telecom watchdog has reached preliminary agreement with the country’s search engines on measures to block local residents’ access to banned gambling sites. This week, the Roskomnadzor agency convened a meeting with the country’s leading search engines, including Yandex, Sputnik and Mail.ru, to ensure that Russian citizens are denied access to the thousands of websites that the watchdog consigns to its ever-expanding blacklist each week. In July, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed two federal laws: one requiring Russian internet service providers to block all mirror sites of blacklisted domains, and the other putting strict new curbs on Russians’ use of…
