Most Americans Don’t Know Sports Betting Is Illegal

A new study from the American Gaming Association says that six in 10 Americans don’t realize sports betting is a legal activity in just the state of Nevada. Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research found that just 38 percent of respondents “recognize that it is not legal in most of the nation.” A 1992 federal law limits traditional sports betting to the Silver State (Delaware has limited sports betting in the form of parlays). Tabcorp Guilty of Running Illegal Gambling Advertisements

Australian betting operator Tabcorp has found itself in hot water over a 2015 promotion that offer rewards to new accounts. Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court found the gambling operator guilty of three counts of illegally luring punters to open accounts, skynews.com.au reported on Friday. The promotion in question was published in a newspaper and online in August 2015 and offered bonus bets as well as other rewards as inducements, according to the news outlet. Phil Mickelson Linked to Sports Betting Ring

Professional golfer Phil Mickelson has been linked to an illegal sports betting ring after it was claimed that almost $3 million (€2.7 million) was laundered from the player. According to a report on ESPN’s Outside the Lines, former bet handicapper Gregory Silveira of California agreed to plead guilty on three counts of money laundering that took place between 2010 and 2013. Silveira, who was working for an offshore gambling organisation, admitted to laundering the money from an unnamed client, said to be US golfer Mickelson. Computerized Sweepstakes Games Illegal in California

Computerized “sweepstakes” games offered at special Internet cafes are the equivalent of slot machines that are illegal under state law, the California Supreme Court ruled Thursday. The court said the sweepstakes are games of chance because customers have no way to influence the unpredictable outcome. “When the user, by some means (here swiping a card or entering a number), causes the machine to operate, and then plays a game to learn the outcome, which is governed by chance, the user is playing a slot machine,” Associate Justice Ming Chin wrote for the court. Illegal Gambling Website Warning from Macau

The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, DICJ, issued a warning Friday, June 12, 2015 to the public regarding illegal gaming websites. Illegal gambling sites are claiming they are licensed and regulated by Macau’s government, without proper permissions. The government has not issued online gambling licenses to the companies claiming to be regulated. All gambling websites purported to be licensed by Macau are illegal. The DICJ published the warning after several inquiries from the public. Macau Business Daily – The gaming operator has issued a warning that its brands are being used by fraudulent gaming and betting websites. After SJM and Las Vegas Sands, the Galaxy group is the third operator to face online exploitation.
