New Year, New Online Gambling Ban

We return for 2019 with a new look, a new studio, new music and a new try at an online gambling ban! Our old buddy Sheldon Adelson wants politicians (namely, Lindsey Graham) to use the Federal Wire Act for yet another pathetic attempt at an online gambling ban… just like last year. Other gambling news comes from Michigan, New York and Missouri. Here we go again! According to reporting from Gambling Compliance (paywall), the 2011 Department of Justice (DOJ) opinion that opened the door for states to legalize online gambling — casino games, online poker and the lottery — will…

Adelson Puppet Wants 2019 Online Gambling Ban

One of Sheldon Adelson’s political playthings is at it again. Senator Lindsey Graham plans to use the confirmation hearing of William Barr, the Attorney General nominee, to push for a 2019 online gambling ban. According to a report, the 2011 Department of Justice (DOJ) opinion that opened the door for states to legalize online gambling will be one of the first things Graham asks nominee Bill Barr to address. The Senator has indicated that he would seek an updated written or verbal stance from Barr on the 1961 Wire Act. Using the bulk of his time to question an Attorney…

New Year’s Online Gambling Ban

The new year has brought America yet another attempt to ban online gambling in the country. Four US Congressmen have sent a letter to Rod Rosenstein, Deputy Attorney General at the Department of Justice. They are again asking for a reversal of the DOJ’s opinion that the 1961 Federal Wire Act does not apply to online gambling. This week’s special comes from PokerStars Casino.

New Year… New Try to Ban Online Gaming

It happened again. Several members of Congress collectively penned a letter to the US Department of Justice to ask that the 2011 Wire Act decision be overturned. This move would effectively prohibit states from offering online poker and casino games while giving Congress a chance to ban online gaming. This action was just discovered by the Poker Players Alliance but happened on December 19. And if it sounds familiar, it is due to a very similar letter was sent on November 21 by different members of Congress. While US legislators are tasked with handling major issues like taxes, infrastructure, health…

Senators Still Pursue Online Gambling Ban

It has been a while since we heard from Senator Lindsey Graham (R – S.C.) about trying an online gambling ban in the United States, so I suppose it was about time for him to try to revive his dead horse. Last week, Graham and Senator Dianne Feinstein (D – CA) sent a letter to U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, asking him to reverse the Wire Act clarification issued by the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel in 2011, a decision which would effectively make online gambling completely illegal in the U.S. As readers may remember, the Wire…

US Senators Bring Back Online Gambling Ban

Advocates of a federal online gambling ban are framing the recent legalization of iGaming in Pennsylvania as a clear signal that the federal government needs to involve itself in gambling at the state level, in a letter sent to the Department of Justice. The letter was co-signed by two of the usual suspects in the anti-online gambling movement, Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Lindsey Graham. This is far from the first such letter, and as usual, it’s riddled with mischaracterizations, conjecture and outright falsehoods. The pair open by saying the 2011 OLC opinion, “Reversed 50 years of interpreting the Wire Act…
