Macau Aims at Another Las Vegas Staple: Boxing
From AP – A Chinese fighter’s victory at a Macau showdown brings the world’s top casino market a step closer to challenging Las Vegas for dominance of another Sin City staple: big-time boxing matches. Macau, which long ago eclipsed Vegas as the world’s top gambling city, is now looking to add to its allure by holding the kind of boxing bouts that Las Vegas is known for. The tiny Chinese enclave is hosting a series of high-profile bouts this year featuring a pair of Asian stars: Chinese two-time Olympic gold medalist Zou Shiming and Philippine fighter Manny Pacquiao. Zou made…
Cyprus to allow more than one casino?
From Cyprun-Mail – PAPHOS plans to lobby the government to change its recent decision to create one casino resort rather than give out licences to each district. Andreas Soteriades, Secretary of SEKO Paphos – the Coordinating Committee of Parties and Organisations – told the Cyprus Mail that a special meeting has been called for this coming Saturday to discuss the matter in more depth. “Representatives of local hotels, shops and other organisations, as well as the mayors from the district will discuss what we can do to ensure Paphos is able to have a casino,” he said. “It will be…
How Macau Gamblers Are Lured to Las Vegas
From Business Week – In the gambling industry, everyone is watching Macau, the spit of land south of Hong Kong that is rapidly supplanting Las Vegas as the world’s gaming capital. But don’t count Vegas out just yet—some of the world’s high rollers in Macau appear to be curious about that famous Strip in the desert. Wynn Resorts (WYNN), Las Vegas Sands (LVS), and MGM Resorts International (MGM) have been expanding rapidly in the Chinese enclave, lured by the enormous opportunities of a large and growing middle class, plus wealthy gamblers. As the Macau business grows, American gambling companies have…

The Daily Record newspaper said that £149m of the total amount staked was lost on the casino-style terminals, which allow gamers to bet up to £100 every 20 seconds on roulette, poker and blackjack. Critics have branded FOBTs part of a ‘toxic economy’ and have called for legislation to mirror that of Ireland where politicians recently outlawed the machines. However, UK ministers have…

Thou Shalt Not…. Gamble?
This Week in Gambling – As a Christian man I am constantly shocked by the ignorance and hypocrisy carried out under the religious umbrella. So, I would like to make one thing very clear right now: Gambling is not a sin. There is no scriptural support for saying that it is, no matter what vague passage is taken out of context and twisted to fit someone moral opinion… so shut up. Gambling is not ethically right or wrong, it’s an activity. Most Christians don’t like to openly talk about sex, either. But sex, like gambling, is an activity that is…
