Colorado Sports Betting Bill on Governors Desk
The bill that will regulate Colorado sports betting has passed through the state Senate and will sits on the desk of Governor Jared Polis. The vote will give citizens the final say in whether the activity is legalized or not. Citizens of the state get the last say on this issue due to Colorado’s legal landscape which includes a Taypayer Bill of Rights. This requires that citizens must approve any tax increase. The state would tax…
Governor Legalizes Indiana Sports Betting
Indiana sports betting will become legal under a bill signed by the governor this week. That bill also approves the construction of two new land based casinos in the state. So far 2019 has been good for sports betting reform, as Indiana joins Montana and Tennessee in moving to legalize the activity. Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein Resigns
US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein resigns, as he had been planning to do for months. It’s not his age or another job opportunity; it’s a chaotic and taxing work environment, and it has been since the start of the Trump administration. Rosenstein paid close attention to the Wire Act decision and the reactions to it from various states. AG Jeff Sessions tendered his resignation in early November 2018, putting Rosenstein in charge of the DOJ pending the process of nominating and voting in a new AG. Not long after, the New Hampshire Lottery Commission filed its lawsuit against the…
Justice Department Wire Act Shell Game
In another supplemental filing offered by the DOJ and the US Attorney’s Office in the lawsuit brought by New Hampshire Lottery and entities, the Justice Department Wire Act opinion evades the question of whether the re-re-interpreted law applies to those lotteries. In the most recent filing, submitted on April 25, DOJ attorneys again try to have it both ways. In response to New Hampshire’s most recent filing regarding the reach of the term “whoever”, which is an important legal point within the 1961 act, the DOJ continues to dispute New Hampshire’s assertions and motion for summary judgment. Instead, the DOJ…
Colorado Sports Betting Makes a Push
Colorado sports betting could become a reality as soon as next May, if a recently introduced bill on the matter gains traction in the state Legislature and voters approve the legalization of sports gambling in the upcoming November vote. Democratic House Majority Leader Alec Garnett and Republican Minority Leader Patrick Neville introduced the bill late on Thursday. The piece of legislation, if passed, would place a sports betting question on the November ballot. State residents would be asked whether a 10% flat tax on net proceeds from regulated sports gambling should be implemented. The ballot question will be concerned with…
