Aristocrat Gaming Cleared by Australian Federal Court
The Federal Court in the Australian state of Victoria has dismissed a case brought by a former gambling addict against slot machine maker Aristocrat Technologies Australia and Australian casino operator Crown Resorts. The judge said that the design of a popular line of poker machines was not misleading or unconscionable. The lawsuit was launched in 2016 by former gambling addict Shonica Guy. The lawsuit argued that the Dolphin Treasure machine, which is manufactured by Aristocrat and available to players at Crown Resorts’ properties, had been “deceptively designed to mislead players”. The lawsuit was filed against casino resort Crown Melbourne and…
Anti-Doping to Get Full Review by British Horseracing Authority
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has announced plans to carry out a full review of its anti-doping rules. Approved by the national regulator’s board this week, the decision to assess the current regulations comes after the BHA received a briefing on the impact of recent decisions involving anti-doping cases in the sport. An independent disciplinary panel was established last year and has provided what BHA described as an “impartial and independent” scrutiny of the sport’s rules. However, the BHA said that this has raised concerns over certain “assumptions” made across the racehorse industry in regards to the penalties for breaking…
Macau Experiences 18.6% Year-on-Year Growth in Baccarat Revenues
New figures released this month by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) revealed that overall baccarat revenues in Macau experienced impressive 18.4% year-on-year growth in the final quarter of 2017. The figures demonstrate almost a three-fold increase in its growth rates experienced during the rest of 2017. Between Q1-Q3 2017, Macau’s mass baccarat revenues totaled just 6.5% year-on-year growth and analysts were justifiably encouraged by the excellent finish to the year, resulting in renewed hope for a stronger mass performance in the next 12 months. Mass baccarat revenue for Q4 2017 totalled $2.91 billion, compared with VIP baccarat revenues…
IGT Brings Players into 4th Dimension with Sphinx 4D Slot Machine
From the very beginning, slot machines — with fast-spinning reels and the sound of coins clattering into metal buckets — were designed to excite the senses and hopefully drive players to bet more. Today, slot makers are hoping new technology will make games even more immersive. One example is IGT’s new Sphinx 4D Slot Machine, placed on casino floors for the first time at Station Casinos properties on Wednesday. Of course, 3-D, in which objects appear to float and move in space, isn’t new; 3-D movies were popular in the ’50s. The technology is not even new to gaming. IGT’s…
Vegas Hotel Uses Microwaves to Detect Guns, Knives & Bombs
Activate satellite view in Google Maps and head to a Vegas hotel on The Strip and you’ll see it: a strange smattering of Y-shaped buildings. Mandalay Bay, Monte Carlo, Treasure Island, The Mirage. Their blueprints put gambling at the center of everything, funneling visitors past slot machines and card tables whether they’re en route to a show, their room, a restaurant, or a retail shop. For years, the casino floor was where Vegas resorts made most of their money, and the Y was devilishly good at monetizing it. The Westgate Las Vegas Hotel Resort and Casino was the first mega-casino…
Nigerian Congress May Revoke 18 Gaming Licenses
At least 18 lottery operators may lose their gaming licenses, as they have caught the ire of the Nigerian congress for failing to meet their financial obligations to the government. The Daily Post reported that a frustrated Rep. Suleiman Hussaini Kangiwa, chair of the House committee on governmental affairs, is done waiting for these lottery operators to pay their tax duties and government fees and has warned them that their licenses will be revoked. Kangiwa also threatened to issue arrest warrants against the erring lottery operators during a meeting with them and the management of the Nigeria Lottery Regulatory Commission…
