New York Voters May Decide Upstate Casino Expansion

WXXI News – This November, voters will get a chance to decide whether to expand gambling in upstate New York. But because of a quirk in the election calendar, it’s likely that downstate voters will be the ones to make that decision. Governor Cuomo and the legislature agreed in June to allow up to four new resort style gambling casinos upstate. Locations include the Catskills, Southern Tier and Capital- Saratoga Regions.  Other areas of the state already have casino gambling run by Indian tribes. But in order for the new casinos to be built, the state’s constitution has to be…

US overhauls process for recognizing Tribes, concerns of new casino rush

Washington Post – His tribe once controlled huge swaths of what is now New York and Connecticut, but the shrunken reservation presided over by Alan Russell today hosts little more than four mostly dilapidated homes and a pair of rattlesnake dens. The Schaghticoke Indian Tribe leader believes its fortunes may soon be improving. As the U.S. Interior Department overhauls its rules for recognizing American Indian tribes, a nod from the federal government appears within reach, potentially bolstering its claims to surrounding land and opening the door to a tribal-owned casino. “It’s the future generations we’re fighting for,” Russell said. New Jersey casino bets on strippers

NBC – What if, after seven years of plunging casino revenues and fleeing customers, Atlantic City’s real problem was this: People are wearing too much clothing? It will be the most audacious adult offering in an Atlantic City casino, though it’s not the first: Revel has offered the Royal Jelly burlesque show since it opened, the…

Opposition Coalition in Australia pledges to replace regulator

iGaming Business – The opposition Coalition in Australia has vowed to abolish the country’s national gambling regulator and replace it with an industry advisory council, if the alliance of parties wins the federal government election on September 7. The advisory council would comprise club and gaming venue operators who would meet quarterly, while the Coalition would hand responsibility for problem gambling support services to the states and would ban the extension of credit to online gamblers. The Coalition said that it supported a “national voluntary pre-commitment program for electronic gaming machines” but accused the ruling Labor party of failing to…

Judge Approves Demolition of Las Vegas Strip hotel

A judge has granted permission for owners of the CityCenter development to demolish a flawed, half-built Las Vegas Strip hotel tower on the Strip after developers completed a fourth round of testing on the building. Clark County District Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez approved CityCenter’s motion Friday, clearing the way for owners MGM Resorts International and Dubai World to raze the Harmon Hotel tower. CityCenter officials said they would immediately start planning for the demolition, which could happen within a year. The Harmon was supposed to be a 48-story Las Vegas Strip hotel, and a part of the glittery $8.5 billion CityCenter…

Atlantic City battles to end a losing streak

Daily Herald – The billboard hard by the Atlantic City Expressway is supposed to speak for a single casino, not an entire company town. But Revel Casino Resort’s marketing slogan resonates loudly throughout this struggling seaside resort. “Gamblers Wanted,” it says. And how. Atlantic City, the erstwhile East Coast gambling mecca, is on an epic losing streak; over the past six years, competitive and economic forces have crushed the local casino economy, driving revenue down more than 40 percent. Once, the city that inspired the board game Monopoly had its own gambling monopoly on this side of the country. Now,…
