Bookmakers in UK May Face Loss of Licence If They Fail to Tackle Problem Gambling
In February 2016, Paddy Power came under a great deal of fire when it was discovered that they had encouraged a known problem gambler to continue gambling. The whole fiasco resulted him losing five jobs, his home, and access to his children. Not a brilliant situation. The Gambling Commission noted that some large operators such as Paddy Power were not doing enough to protect problem gamblers. It also noted that the betting machines that it was using were making it easy to launder money. Paddy Power ended up making a voluntary donation of £280,000 to various causes. Politicians are campaigns…
Online Gambling Revenue Set to Soar in 2017
The market size of online casinos is steadily increasing each year. According to Statista, in 2009 the sector was worth $24.73billion, and that rose to $45.86 billion last year. A report from Yahoo finance detailed how the market is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 10.8% by 2024. There is a strong correlation between the booming online casino industry and the equally successful mobile market, and the two will work hand in hand to gain even more revenue this year. Reasons for Optimism in Pennsylvania Online Gambling Push
A key Pennsylvania lawmaker is optimistic on online gambling coming to the Keystone State in the next few months. Pennsylvania state Sen. Mario Scavello — the newly appointed chairman of the Community, Economic and Recreational Development Committee — made some news on Friday when he told Mark Gueretze of CDC Gaming Reports: “It looks like online gaming has the support to pass.” Scavello, went on to tell CDC a meeting is scheduled for January 17 in which legislators will hammer out the specifics of a bill. Then: “Sometime in March, we’ll have something done and passed in the House and…
Online Gaming on Massachusetts Radar
Massachusetts has become the latest state in the US to be linked with a potential move to legalise online gaming after State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg pledged to introduce legislation. According to the Sun Chronicle newspaper, Goldberg said the legislation would help to shore up the state’s lottery market, which is worth almost $1 billion (€943.7 million). However, Goldberg said her efforts would be separate to a state-backed study into online casinos, with the Special Commission on Online Gaming, Fantasy Sports Gaming and Daily Fantasy Sports having until August this year to make a recommendation as to how the state should…
Trump’s Attorney General Nominee and Online Gambling
During his confirmation hearing on Tuesday, Jeff Sessions promised that as attorney general he would “revisit” a 2011 Justice Department memo that interpreted the Wire Act of 1961 as applying only to sports betting, which opened the door to state-regulated online gambling. The implication was that Sessions might revert to the department’s earlier position on the statute, which implausibly read it as banning all forms of internet-assisted betting, even those permitted by state law. Although Sessions’ comments set off alarm bells among online poker fans and other supporters of legalization, it’s not clear how serious he is about reversing the…
