888 Poker Last Push for Bwin.Party?

Online poker operator 888 Group believes it is still at the table in the battle for the online gaming company Bwin.party. 888 Poker runs a popular website as well as online casino gaming, has arranged a meeting with Bwin this week. The move comes despite Bwin’s board declaring last week that a rival offer from GVC and Canadian poker giant Amaya was its preferred option. After that announcement, GVC chief executive Kenny Alexander, told City A.M. he was “just days away” from completing the deal. A spokesperson for GVC yesterday downplayed the challenge from 888, telling City A.M.: “We have…

EU’s Top Court to Consider UK Point-of-Consumption Tax

The European Union’s top court will consider the legality of the UK’s online gambling point-of-consumption tax (POCT). The UK implemented its 15% POCT last December, shortly after the Gibraltar Betting and Gaming Association (GBGA) launched a preemptive legal challenge. The GBGA believes the POCT discriminates against Gibraltar-licensed UK-facing operators and was primarily intended to boost the UK government’s tax coffers, rather than to protect UK punters from alleged harm. On Tuesday, the UK’s High Court sided with the GBGA, announcing that it was sending the case to the Court of Justice for the European Union (CJEU). The High Court said…

Liquidators to Evaluate 666Bet Debts

666Bet’s liquidators are hoping to conclude how much is owed to customers and creditors by the end of this month. David Standish of KPMG UK and Linda Johnson of KPMG Channel Islands were appointed Joint Liquidators of Metro Play Limited – the company that owns online gaming operator 666Bet – after it was compulsorily wound up following an Order of the Court of Alderney earlier this month. The liquidators have encouraged those owed monies to contact them, with one customer who has already been in touch with KPMG telling TotallyGaming.com that he is still owed £4,300 (€6,047/$6,690) by the company….

EC Challenges Germans to Defend Online Gambling Policy

The European Commission has joined the chorus of critics of Germany’s stalled online gambling regulatory regime. Late last month, the EC issued a formal rebuke of Germany’s three-year-old federal interstate gambling treaty. It’s been nearly one year since Germany awarded 20 federal online sports betting licenses but legal challenges by rejected applicants have prevented any of these licenses from taking effect. This failure to launch loomed large in the EC’s shaming letter, but it was far from the only criticism. The EC also chastised the lack of transparency during the license application process and questioned the reasoning behind Germany’s decision…
