Arguments for DOJ Wire Act Opinion Next Week

In a drama that never seems to die, a Federal Appellate Court will hear arguments on the 2018 DOJ Wire Act Opinion by teleconference next week on June 18th. The remote conferencing is because of restrictions still in place because of the COVID-19 crisis. In 2002, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court’s ruling that the act was exclusive to sports betting, and while there were efforts in Congress to amend the law, a Department of Justice opinion in 2011 stated interstate gambling transactions that were not sports-related were not in purview to the Wire Act. Washington DC Sports Betting Launches

Following a long wait and an uphill battle, Washington DC sports betting has finally been launched. The DC Lottery announced the roll out of their online sports wagering platform, although the mobile app has again been delayed until later this month. Betting on sports had been scheduled to launch in March but was delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Players can now register an account via the Gambet website and make sports bets, even though there are very few sporting events taking place right now. New York Mobile Sports Betting Push Returns

Efforts to regulate New York mobile sports betting have once again found their way to the state legislature, thanks to our old friend Joseph Addabbo. The State Senator has now called on Governor Andrew Cuomo to legalize the activity before the end of this year.
