eSports Betting Now Legal in Nevada
Nevada, home of Las Vegas, has been a gambling hub since the desert was transformed many years ago. Las Vegas is also slowly becoming a hotspot for esports competitions as Sin City welcomes the industry. The issue, however, was gambling with esports which has fallen under scrutiny for quite some time. This is about to change after Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval signed a new bill into law this past weekend which extends state laws on sports wagering into esport events. The bill is set to become effective on July 1st. The “esports betting bill,” or Senate Bill 240, is quite…
New Bill Aims to Repeal US Sports Betting Ban
A congressional committee on Thursday unveiled a draft of comprehensive legislation that would repeal the federal prohibition on sports betting and allow states to legalize online gambling. The recommendation substantially diminishes the odds that the high court will agree to hear the case, but the decision will only further ramp up pressure on sports leagues to address the issue and build momentum for a legislative solution, a panel of experts told the East Coast Gaming Congress in Atlantic City on Wednesday. “I think the expectation was that the Justice Department would say ‘No you should…
Alabama Says “No” to Fantasy Sports
The tide never turned for a daily fantasy sports bill in Alabama. As a result, DraftKings, FanDuel and the rest of the paid-entry fantasy sports industry is likely to continue to stay out of the state for the foreseeable future. The Alabama legislature adjourned its session on Friday night. That adjournment did not come with a vote in the state Senate on a bill (H 354) that would have legalized and regulated paid-entry fantasy in the state. There had been action on the bill on Wednesday — including amendments — but the bill never came up for a vote. Given…
California Says Fantasy Sports are Gambling
A district court in California dealt a blow to FanDuel, DraftKings and other DFS operators last week when it held that the payment of entry fees to enter daily fantasy horse racing contests that are returned to winners as cash prizes constituted a wager. The court was handing down a preliminary ruling in a suit originally filed in December 2015 by racetrack and wagering business the Stronach Group against Kentucky-based Horse Racing Labs, LLC, operator of the Derby Wars website. Derby Wars was providing free and pay-to-play contests, with points accumulated based on the performance of horses in real races…
