The US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) has delayed a decision as to whether it will hear an appeal from New Jersey in its attempt to legalise sports betting in the state. According to various reports in the US media, SCOTUS has requested a brief from the Solicitor General on the ongoing case, before considering taking the case at a later date. It has continually argued that a federal law — PASPA — that prevents most forms of sports betting around the country is unconstitutional. On Wednesday, both Gov. Chris Christie (acting on behalf of the state of New Jersey) and the NJ Thoroughbred Horsemen’s…

Trump Could Propel US Legalized Sports Betting

Some powerful folks in the American casino world are betting on Donald Trump fast-forwarding the push toward legalized sports gambling in this country. In his year-end conference call with reporters, Geoff Freeman, president of the pro-casino American Gaming Association (AGA) trade group, said Trump’s firsthand business experience within the gaming industry bodes well for a repeal of a federal law barring sports betting in most states. “With regards to sports betting, I think that we are entering a perfect storm,’’ Freeman said. Freeman cited interest among television broadcasters and individual team owners in repealing the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports…
