California Sports Betting Props Fail Miserably
We knew it would happen. We told you it would happen. Still, the failure of both California sports betting props is not what we wanted to see. We were hoping we were wrong. We were hoping to publish a news story where we apologized for ever doubting them. But in the end, we were correct. Hurray for us. California sports betting props have been soundly rejected by voters in the state. Proposition 26, backed by Tribal gaming, couldn’t even pull 30% of residents voting in favor of the measure. Proposition 27, backed by big sports betting operators, did even worse…

This week’s gambling news finds that the Nevada Gaming Commission is now considering the regulation of esports betting! At least six esports players and a coach have been disqualified from the NBA 2k Esports League for betting on games! Hello friends! And welcome to This Week in Gambling, where voters in California are headed to the polls for the big sports betting vote. And that is NOT this week’s big story… because no one knows what the hell is gonna happen! If you’re…
Esports Gambling Violations Disqualify Players
There has been a major shakeup in the NBA 2K League, were several Esports gambling violations have resulted in the disqualification of at least six players. An investigation found the players has either made bets, or attempted to place bets, on NBA 2K League games. Some of these players made the bets on their own, while others to place bets for them. Additionally, rules were broken when these players failed to report the violations, and to cooperate with the league’s investigation. The president of the league, Brendan Donohue, stated that the integrity of the games will always “be the NBA…
Nevada Esports Regulation Moves Forward
The possibility of regulated Nevada esports got a lot closer recently, as a state committee on the matter made the decision to send a proposal to regulate the activity to the Gaming Control Board and Gaming Commission. They are recommending the state amend the current regulations for race books and sports pools to include esports. The Nevada Esports Technical Advisory Committee’s recommendation would allow residents to bet on video game competitions, both online and in person, through existing sports books who take the action. The final draft of the Committee included the ability for sportsbooks to have some flexibility on…
Streak Continues for Nevada Gaming Revenue
It may seem like old news at this point, but for what it’s worth Nevada gaming revenue was over a billion dollars again in September. This reported by the state Gaming Control Board. And according to our calculations that makes the 19th month in a row that the state has hauled in a billion bucks. The “hot streak” following the closures for the Coronavirus pandemic have been nothing short of amazing. And this September also out performed last September, when gaming in the state “only” brought in $1.16 billion in revenue. It’s all perspective, really. The numbers for September came…
California Sports Betting Props Will Probably Fail
It’s come down to this: Both of the California sports betting props have their ‘big day’ next week. Voters will head to the polls, with the immediate future of sports wagers at stake. And the very real possibility that neither of the propositions will pass. Well, that sucks. In California, a ballot proposition needs just one vote above 50% to pass. But there are two propositions to regulate betting on sports in the state, and the confusion between the two may end up leaving residents waiting at least another year for sports bets. Proposition 26, backed by Tribal Gaming interests,…
California Sports Betting: A Federal Perspective
We speak with E. Sequoyah Simermeyer of the National Indian Gaming Commission about California sports betting and the Federal considerations and requirements surrounding the regulation of the activity. The NIGC would be involved with the oversight of sports betting conducted at Tribal Casinos, including technological considerations, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and compact considerations, and helping Tribal Gaming develop partnerships to deliver sports betting to customers. Sports betting in California will go before voters soon, and they will decide what form of wagering (if any) will become regulated. The two dueling propositions on the ballot would either make sports betting…
California Sportsbooks & Cardrooms vs Tribal Casinos
Politics does make strange bedfellows. Although, it’s not such a stretch to see California sportsbooks uniting with cardrooms. After all, many sports bettors enjoy poker… and many a poker player has been known to make the occasional sports bet. But now, the stakes are high. What’s on the line is the future of gambling in California. If you are just hearing about this, perhaps a crash course in what’s happening with sports betting in the state is in order. You can read about how the convoluted issue of sports betting began there. Or the recent coalition of mayors in the…
