Colorado Sports Betting Gets DraftKings & FanDuel

FanDuel and DraftKings will both be a part of the Colorado sports betting landscape via an agreement with Twin River Worldwide Holdings, who recently acquired three casinos in Black Hawk from Affinity Gaming. Colorado could be the 5th state launch for FanDuel, which already operates in Indiana, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Sportsbooks will be allowed to legally take bets in Colorado on May 1, but there’s no guarantee that state officials will be ready. To read more on Colorado…

New Jersey Attacks DOJ Wire Act Opinion

New Jersey’s Attorney General has filed a legal brief setting out the state’s opposition to the DOJ Wire Act opinion, a reinterpretation of the 1961 Act, arguing that federal law actually permits most forms of online wagering. The aggressive move from AG Gurbir was filed with a First District Federal Court of Appeals in response to the DOJ’s appeal against a New Hampshire Court decision that struck down its revised stance on the Act. The DOJ’s revised stance said that the Wire Act’s prohibition applies to all forms of gambling and not just sports betting, thus reversing a 2011 ruling….

Michigan Sports Betting Goes Live

Michigan sports betting is off and running, and bettors in the state will have their first opportunity to place a legal wager with today’s opening of two Detroit-area sportsbooks, a momentous first step in the state’s fledgling industry. The bill would allow sports betting only at Tribal Gaming casinos and has passed from a Senate committee, moving now to the full Senate for a vote. The Seattle Times reports the committee sent the bill to the full Senate despite objections that it grants a tax-free monopoly to the state’s Indian tribes while hurting smaller commercial card-room casinos. The vote by the Senate is the last major barrier before sending the legislation to Gov. Jay Inslee for his signature. The bill would allow betting on…

No Cigar! Wyoming Sports Betting Fails

The hope of Wyoming sports betting has been voted down by the state House of Representatives by a vote of 32-27. The bill is now dead, and so is sports betting in the state for 2020. Sponsored by Representative Tom Walters and Senator Ogden Driskill, HB 0225 had focused on legalizing online and mobile sports wagering, with the aim of opening a regulated market no later than January 1, 2021. Measures set out in the bill included operators having to pay an initial $20,000 for a license. These permits would have been valid for 12 months, after which license-holders would…
