New Jersey Sues Justice Department – The State of New Jersey has joined New Hampshire as one of the states to sue the Justice Department over their recent reversal of opinion on the Federal Wire Act. New Jersey had demanded documentation related to their revised interpretation of the act, and the DOJ failed to respond. The Department of Justice reversed its 2011 Wire Act this past January, ruling the law’s prohibition applies to all forms of gambling and not just sports betting. Sports betting in Montana is now a regulated activity, as the state becomes the ninth to legalize the activity. Late last week Governor Steve Bullock signed a bill approved by the state’s House of Representatives authorizing licensed bars and restaurants to offer sports betting via electronic kiosks as well as through mobile betting apps that will only work within the confines of these venues. Wagering technology will be provided by Montana Lottery’s tech partner Intralot, with revenue expected to hit $3.7m in year one, rising to $5.4m in three years. Tennessee online sports betting will not be opposed by the governor after a vote of approval last week in the state House of Representatives. The Tennessee Senate also passed legislation that would permit online gambling for sports events beginning July 1, while continuing to prohibit the practice at brick-and-mortar locations. The National Collegiate Athletic Association has made a major about face on their policy of not allowing sports bets. Moving forward, NCAA sports betting will be allowed on their championship events in states where sports gambling is legal and regulated. The US Supreme Court ruled against the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, or PASPA,  last year. That decision paved the way for states to regulate betting on sports.
