Las Vegas Not Concerned with Sports Betting Reform
You can’t miss the world’s largest sports-betting parlor, just past the bronze Elvis statue at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino. It’s a glitzy temple to the big business of laying odds on college and pro games, with 400 cushy leather seats and a massive wall of video screens. Westgate spent $18 million building it two years ago. And now that the U.S. Supreme Court has put an end to Nevada’s near-monopoly on sports wagering? To hear Westgate executives tell it, no problem. “We look at it as an opportunity,” said Jay Kornegay, vice president of race and sports…
777-Room Las Vegas Casino and Hotel Planned for Downtown
A planned downtown Las Vegas casino will feature a 459-foot-tall, 777-room hotel tower and 117,740 square feet of gaming space where the Las Vegas Club once stood on Fremont Street, according to documents submitted with the city. Derek Stevens, owner of The D casino downtown, is listed as owner and chief executive officer of the 18 Fremont project, a reference to the property address. According to documents filed with the Las Vegas Planning Commission, the property will have a 1,526-space parking garage across Main Street that will be connected to the casino via a sky bridge. More about the new…
Video Game Gambling Set Sights on Vegas
Is it possible that video game gambling could get a foothold in Las Vegas? “We’re taking over Olympic stadiums,” Dan “Frodan” Chou announced. His words are as bold as his Smurf-colored hair, and underscore his aversion to modesty in a sparkling red sports coat. The popular esports broadcaster is speaking for his industry at large. Its next conquest: Las Vegas. Plenty of foot soldiers have gathered before him on an overcast Wednesday evening to get a first look at Esports Arena Las Vegas, a 30,000-square-foot video gaming Xanadu opening in March in what used to be LAX nightclub at Luxor….
Vegas Hotel Uses Microwaves to Detect Guns, Knives & Bombs
Activate satellite view in Google Maps and head to a Vegas hotel on The Strip and you’ll see it: a strange smattering of Y-shaped buildings. Mandalay Bay, Monte Carlo, Treasure Island, The Mirage. Their blueprints put gambling at the center of everything, funneling visitors past slot machines and card tables whether they’re en route to a show, their room, a restaurant, or a retail shop. For years, the casino floor was where Vegas resorts made most of their money, and the Y was devilishly good at monetizing it. The Westgate Las Vegas Hotel Resort and Casino was the first mega-casino…
Could New Jersey Sports Betting Hurt Las Vegas?
The law of unintended consequences could apply to the New Jersey sports betting case. Many are focused on the prospect of the US Supreme Court ruling in favor of the state in its quest to offer legal sports betting within its borders. That could open the possibility of states around the country changing their laws to offer sports betting, if the court rules that PASPA is unconstitutional. PASPA is the law that bans almost all forms of sports wagering, outside of Nevada. But there’s a flipside to that possibility: Namely, SCOTUS could rule that PASPA is unconstitutional and shut down…
Like it or Not, New NFL Stadium has Gambling Ties
The new NFL stadium in Las Vegas doesn’t yet have a name and isn’t expected to open until 2020. But when it does, at least one nickname certainly will apply: The House That Gambling Built. The $1.9 billion project never would have made it through the state legislature – or attracted the Oakland Raiders – without the support of the gambling industry, according to experts and the legislative record. “The industry has been instrumental in the project,” said Jeremy Aguero, an analyst who works for the Las Vegas Stadium Authority, the stadium’s landlord. After it opens, the Raiders also might…
