The Launch of Maine Sports Betting

The long and arduous wait for Maine sports betting is finally coming to an end this weekend. On Friday, November 3rd, Maine will become the 36th state with live, regulated betting on sporting events. That day will be more than 15 months after the activity was legalized. The governor signed the Maine sports betting bill back in May of 2022. That bill gave the exclusive rights to online sports bets to the state’s Indian tribes. The state Gambling Control Unit will regulate sports gambling, and they published regulations in January of this year. Even though the activity has not officially…

Online Sports Betting in Maine Set for Launch

Enjoy summer while it’s here, but come this fall online sports betting in Maine will officially be up and running. It won’t come in time for the start of the NFL season, but by Thanksgiving you’ll be able to bet your Uncle Ed on all the Thursday games! Shannon Moss of the Maine Department of Public Safety stated that “Temporary or initial licenses will be issued on the day of adoption to allow licensees to go live and offer wagers on sports according to law and rule.” The State Gambling Control Unit has already presented their set of proposed rules…

Maine Sports Betting On Hold 8 Months

The law goes into effect today. But Maine sports betting will be held up at least eight months… possibly longer. In fact, the Gambling Control Unit says they may need more than year to get things in order. Potentially pushing any launch date all the way back to January of 2024. In a state as small as Maine this seems a bit odd. After all, there are currently 30 states with live, regulated sports betting in America. Only eight of those states took more than a year to get things up and running. In fact, a twelve-month time frame is…

Maine 34th State to Regulate Sports Betting

We may never have all 50 states decide to regulate sports betting. But slowly and surely, more and more states are reaping the rewards of legalizing the activity, and Maine is just the latest. It looked like the state was going to pass sports betting legislation a couple of years ago, as both the State Senate and House passed legislation to do so. That bill was sent to the Governor, who vetoed the measure in a somewhat surprising move. This time around was different. This new bid to regulate sports betting in Maine gives the states Native American tribes exclusivity…

Maine Sports Betting Fails as House Upholds Veto

The hope for Maine sports betting in 2020 had been renewed when the state Senate over rode the governors veto of the bill last week. However, the state House decided to vote to sustain that veto. So much for that. Tuesday’s 85-57 House tally fell 10 votes short of the two-thirds majority needed to override the veto, and came less than a week after the state Senate voted to override by a one-vote margin, 30-10. The measure, approved by lawmakers last year, would have made Maine the 22nd state to legalize online and in-person wagering on sports. The bill would…

Maine Sports Betting Pushed as Senate Overrides Veto

Maine sports betting looking all but dead when the Governor recently vetoed the bill that would have regulated it. However, the state senate has now voted to override that veto, and now legislation is set to move forward and become law. The Senate voted 20-10 in favor of the measure and will now be put to a vote in Maine’s House, where it is expected to pass. Governor Mills vetoed the bill last month, arguing that the people of Maine are not ready for sports betting. Though she praised the bill’s intention in bringing sports betting away from the black…
