Legal Brief Supports New Jersey Sports Gambling Appeal

The Cato Institute and the Pacific Legal Foundation this week filed an amicus brief which supports the New Jersey sports gambling appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court regarding online sports betting. In February, Chris Christie’s administration filed an appeal with the Supreme Court, stating the federal ban on sports gambling in all but 4 states (the PAPSA law) is unconstitutional. The Cato Institute is a libertarian think tank located in Washington D.C. The think tank was founded in 1974 by Charles Koch. It is considered one of the leading think tanks in the world, sitting at 6th best among American…

March Madness brings little gladness in New Jersey

News Works – As the men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament begins, New Jersey officials are talking about what legalized sports betting would mean to the state. State and Atlantic City officials said the city’s bars, restaurants, and casinos would be packed if sports wagering were allowed. Although voters approved legalization of sports betting in 2011 and Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation allowing it, implementation has been stalled because federal law permits sports wagering in only four states, including Delaware. At a news conference in the Irish Pub in Atlantic City Wednesday, state Sen. Jim Whelan said professional sports leagues are being…

Online poker regulation hailed as victory by casino executives

Las Vegas Review Journal – Early projections of a massive swell of cash from legalized online gaming may have been overly optimistic, but regulation launched a breakthrough in the gambling world, Ultimate Gaming’s top executives told a crowd of about 200 on Thursday at the iGaming North America 2014 conference. New Jersey lawmakers to simplify casino self-exclusion

Miami Herald – Gamblers could ban themselves from casinos or gambling websites without having to admit they have a problem under a bill that the New Jersey Assembly approved Thursday. The state’s voluntary self-exclusion lists permit people to sign up and request that they not be admitted to casinos or allowed to gamble online. But the law currently requires them to attest that they have a gambling problem. The bill, passed by a 77-0 vote, would let people sign up for the lists without having to admit they are compulsive gamblers. “This is simply another option for those who want…

New Jersey officials: Sports betting ban is unfair

The Daily Journal – By this time, New Jersey figured it would be raking in the bets on professional and college sports. But with its bid to offer legal sports betting stalled and relying on a long-shot appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, the only madness this March will bring to New Jersey is anger that things did not turn out quite the way it had hoped. A handful of state legislators and Atlantic City’s mayor held a news conference Wednesday to tout the benefits of sports betting. But the only nine people who could really help them — the…
