New York Mobile Sports Betting Hits Another Snag

Just when you think we can celebrate the passage of New York mobile sports betting, up jumps yet another issue. This time in the form of Tribal Gaming. You see, the Oneida Indian Nation has an agreement with the state. That 2013 agreement says that the Tribe is the “exclusive provider” of gaming in a 10-county region. However, mobile betting will be allowed across the whole state. That could be an issue. The passage of mobile betting seems to require the Oneida Indian Nation to apply for a license to run mobile betting in that 10-county region included in their…

The new budget for the 2022 fiscal year includes plans for New York mobile sports betting. The announcement came as the state legislature and Governor agreed on an arrangement that could allow four online sports books to be operating in the state as soon as September. The New York Lottery would issue licenses to two mobile betting operators, and they would subcontract licenses to a total of four operators. New York Mobile Sports Betting Inches Closer

The possibility of New York mobile sports betting got a big push toward reality, as both the State Senate and Assembly both approved bills that would permit the activity as part of their budgets. The approval of both legislative bodies was for a multi-operator approach which would allow betting kiosks at state racetracks, plus off-track betting could take place at parlors and sports stadiums. This was the preferred plan of sports books, gaming stakeholders and the gambling industry at large. However, Governor Andrew Cuomo prefers the single operator model which would operate  more like the state lottery. Currently, sports wagering…

Casino gambling was passed many years ago after it was determined that the activity is allowed under the New York Constitution. Some would argue that since sports betting takes place at state casinos, it would be a simple matter to allow online or mobile betting. But it’s not that simple. You see, the gambling is permissible under the constitution at “…no more…

New York Mobile Sports Betting Push Returns

Efforts to regulate New York mobile sports betting have once again found their way to the state legislature, thanks to our old friend Joseph Addabbo. The State Senator has now called on Governor Andrew Cuomo to legalize the activity before the end of this year. The Senator said there was a severe deficit with the State budget before the Coronavirus crisis, and he estimates New York could potentially make up $200 million a year. This is a much different situation that back in January, when using mobile devices to place sports bets looked hopeless for 2020. Addabbo also pointed out…

New York Mobile Sports Betting Already Dead for 2020

Well, that didn’t take long. Barely three weeks into the new year and word has already come that New York mobile sports betting will not be happening in 2020. The states budget for the next fiscal year, starting in April, will not extend sports betting outside the confines of upstate casinos. Although Senator Joseph Addabbo has made repeated efforts to legalize online and mobile sports betting and called for their inclusion in the 2020-21 budget, Governor Andrew Cuomo opted not to include these components. Instead, the bill will allow for casinos to take bets throughout their premises, but not from…
