Oklahoma Tribal Gaming Dispute: Did State Screw Up?

A new court filing in the Oklahoma Tribal Gaming case claims that the state officials “reneged” on their agreement. According to the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes, the state failed to provide tribes with substantial exclusivity to conduct gaming operations so tribes no longer have a legal obligation to share a portion of their gaming revenues with the state. The Wichita Tribe’s court filing also claims the tribe is entitled to damages from the state for violating its gaming compact. Oklahoma Tribal Gaming Threatened by Governor

In the ever-escalating battle between Oklahoma Tribal Gaming and the governor, things are getting chippy. Now Governor Kevin Stitt has threatened to bring in commercial casinos to undermine tribal casinos, and Tribal Gaming has now questions Stitt’s Native American ancestry. Stitt remains engulfed in a bitter dispute with a dozen Oklahoma tribes regarding their compacts that allow them to operate Class III gaming – slot machines and table games. The Republican Governor argues their 15-year gaming compacts expired on January 1, while the Native Americans claim the revenue-sharing arrangements automatically renewed. Oklahoma Tribal Gaming: Judge Orders Mediation

The Oklahoma Tribal Gaming dispute with Governor Kevin Stitt continues, but now a Judge in the state has ordered the parties to mediation. Several Native American tribes are currently involved in the lawsuit about the gaming compact, and whether it  automatically renews. Stitt claims the compact didn’t renew at the end of the year, and he wants to renegotiate for a larger slice of casino revenue. Tribal leaders have said they’re willing to renegotiate the fees they pay but first want Stitt to acknowledge their position that the compact automatically renews.
