Casinos Rush for Online Gambling Licenses

Caesars Entertainment and 11 other Atlantic City casinos have begun the process of getting online gambling licenses ahead of a Sunday deadline set by New Jersey regulators. They’re part of a rush to get in on the ground floor as online gambling gets ready to go mainstream nationwide. New Jersey will in November be the third state to launch statewide online poker and other gaming, after Nevada and Delaware. The new gaming outlet became possible when the federal government did an about-face in December 2011. After adamantly opposing online gambling for years, the government said states could issue licenses, but…

Doubling Down on Gambling in Atlantic City

From NY Times – Known simply as Revel, the newest addition to this gambling city was going to be different. The emphasis was on luxury, with the Himalayan salt grotto in the spa, the botanic garden winding toward a rooftop pool, the Michelin chefs instead of all-you-can-eat buffets. There was no smoking in its 47 stories, and with floor-to-ceiling windows offering vistas onto the Atlantic Ocean, you could almost forget the seedier streets at its back. There was a casino, but it was self-contained on one floor, as if it were an aside. This was a resort, its promoters said,…

Delaware won’t be able to contain online gambling

From Delaware Online – Delaware has posted its proposed regulations for Internet gambling. The document is 27 pages of dry legalese, designed to cover every possible option that a would-be licensed agent and provider could conjure up. It’s pretty impressive stuff. But it won’t work. Not that there is anything wrong with the regulations. I’ll leave that to the lawyers and other professionals to decide. It won’t work in the sense that Delaware is trying to contain online gambling. The state wants controls and safeguards that would protect the public and the state’s interests. The dangerous word in those sentences…

From The Telegraph The film producer and Labour peer said the UK is in “desperate need” of cultural skills and talent, and taking advantage of the boom in placing bets via the internet could aid the industry. “We will need to find new ways to help support the arts,” Lord Puttnam wrote in the Yorkshire Post. “As many of you will be aware, there is enormous growth in the gambling industry, particularly online gambling, perhaps even, to some extent, displacing money spent on our National Lottery. “I would like to think that the proceeds of a point of consumption tax…

Every casino in New Jersey wants online gambling

From NJ.com In a sign of how lucrative online gambling in New Jersey may become, every casino in Atlantic City plans to offer its own games in cyberspace, state officials announced today. The city’s dozen casinos had until today to apply to the Division of Gaming Enforcement to be a part of the first round of approvals — and all did, said Lisa Spengler, a spokeswoman for the Division of Gaming Enforcement. Each resort said it plans to partner with an existing internet wagering company to offer digital gaming in New Jersey, Spengler said. Those partner companies — some based…
