Expanded Sports Betting in Washington Moves Forward

It wasn’t that long ago that sports betting in Washington State was passed. That legislation, however, restricts the activity to Tribal casinos. Now, the push is on to expand the activity to card rooms in the state… a move that supporters say will add jobs and tax revenue. The bill has come out of the state Senate and is backed by the Nevada-based Maverick Gaming. They are the same company that backed a similar bill last year. New Jersey Sports Betting Tops Nevada

As the economic free fall continues for the gambling industry amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, New Jersey sports betting has finally overtaken Nevada as leader of the American market. New Jersey’s total handle was over $6 billion last year, while Nevada sports gambling took in only $4.3 billion in 2020. Nevada regulators cited the coronavirus pandemic for the falling revenue. Puerto Rico Sports Betting Looks for April Launch

A key piece of legislation from 2019 will allow for the regulation Puerto Rico sports betting starting later this year. That legislation was amended last year to permit the activity and signed into law by Governor Vázquez Garced. Hope is that betting on sports will create additional tax revenue and jobs. However, the Puerto Rican Gaming Commission notes that the law must be updated to include the amendments made late last year. US Sports Betting to Top $3 Billion This Year

Earnings from the regulated US sports betting market could be over $3 billion for 2021. This according to a report from VIXIO Gambling Compliance. The same report estimates that up to 14 additional states regulating the activity this year, and that the market could generate over $10 billion by 2026. Their report comes as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo changes course on his opposition to mobile sports gambling, opening the door for the regulation of the lucrative market there.
