Pennsylvania & New Jersey Gambling Down Huge

Despite an explosion in the volume of online gambling in the states, both Pennsylvania and New Jersey gambling have fallen dramatically during the pandemic… losing nearly $300 million in revenue. Things were not any better in Delaware. Despite online gambling indeed skyrocketing in all three states, newly released data show it wasn’t nearly enough to offset massive losses from traditional casinos. Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware allow regulated online gaming, including poker, roulette and slots. As casinos across the country went dark under the Coronavirus last month, eyes turned toward those digital life rafts: could they ride out the storm?…

New York Casinos Reopen Plans

The reopening of New York casinos will be considered on an ‘individual basis’ according to Governor Andrew Cuomo. The state will take a regional approach, Cuomo said, with least affected regions opening earlier than their downstate counterparts. The specifics surrounding the opening of casinos in New York may fall under the “attractive nuisances” reference he made, where they pose a potentially dangerous situation by attracting people to them from outside the New York region, and then overwhelm the people in that region. “When the state and health organizations feel that the plan meets the necessary standards and protocols, we look…

Vegas Mayor Ignores Guidelines in Rush to Reopen The Strip

This Week in Gambling reported last week that the mayor of Las Vegas is in a mad rush to reopen The Strip and convention centers. Her comments contradict the guidelines for reopening issued by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, who will ultimately be the authority to sign off on any plan to open the doors of the casinos. The board has a list of procedures in place that businesses should follow before reopening, which include complying with all prescribed local, state and federal COVID-19 heath requirements. Mayor Goodman does not have the power to order Las Vegas’ casinos to reopen….

No one is sure when things will get back to normal, but one casino operator in planning for August to see the Las Vegas strip reopen. “The question is going to be airlift into Las Vegas,” Robert Goldstein, president and chief operating officer of the $34.9 billion Las Vegas Sands, said on the company’s first-quarter earnings call on Wednesday evening. “I don’t know how airlift would look in the next 90 days” or how the economic downturn will affect Americans’ travel plans, he added. “But group business appears to be out there for August and into the fall.” Earlier on…

Nevada Gaming Control Board Speaks on Opening Las Vegas

There has been a lot of speculation over the past several days about when opening Las Vegas would be safe. Even the Mayor chimed in with some optimistic (but not very rational) ideas of her own. But the state Gaming Control Board says that any decision to welcome visitors back to the Strip and Fremont Street will be based on science. The Board has now released a 6-page report which contains 18-points on the specific procedures for reopening casinos after their temporary closures due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The policy, posted late Tuesday on the Control Board’s website, describes a…
