The Marijuana in Las Vegas Dilemma

Many people who visit Nevada already know that you can buy marijuana in Las Vegas legally. But when it comes to consuming it, many don’t know it’s illegal on the Strip… or any public spaces. That includes in casinos. Most guests comply and follow the rules once they learn, and marijuana use causes far fewer problems in Sin City than alcohol. With Nevada law only allowing for the lawful use of marijuana at private residences, tourists have nowhere to legally consume it. “We don’t have anywhere we can tell them where to use it, we just tell them where they…

Sahara Poker Room Set to Re-Open

As more and more Las Vegas casinos seem to be saying “no” to poker, it’s nice to hear that the Sahara poker room is about to make a come back! The Sahara originally closed its 11-table poker room in 2011. The rest of the casino closed a month later, 59 years after its opening in 1952. Seven Licenses Approved for Colorado Sports Betting

Some fifty casino have applied for licenses, and now seven have been approved to conduct Colorado sports betting once the activity becomes legal on May 1st. Each applicant pays $10,000 before applying, plus a $125,000 license fee on approval. Bettors will need to be physically located within the state’s border to place bets via their mobile devices. The state’s two tribal casinos are also understood to be pursuing sports betting, although they do…

Oklahoma Tribal Gaming: Judge Orders Mediation

The Oklahoma Tribal Gaming dispute with Governor Kevin Stitt continues, but now a Judge in the state has ordered the parties to mediation. Several Native American tribes are currently involved in the lawsuit about the gaming compact, and whether it  automatically renews. Stitt claims the compact didn’t renew at the end of the year, and he wants to renegotiate for a larger slice of casino revenue. Tribal leaders have said they’re willing to renegotiate the fees they pay but first want Stitt to acknowledge their position that the compact automatically renews. The judge issued an order in the Western District…

Maine Sports Betting Fails as House Upholds Veto

The hope for Maine sports betting in 2020 had been renewed when the state Senate over rode the governors veto of the bill last week. However, the state House decided to vote to sustain that veto. So much for that. Tuesday’s 85-57 House tally fell 10 votes short of the two-thirds majority needed to override the veto, and came less than a week after the state Senate voted to override by a one-vote margin, 30-10. The measure, approved by lawmakers last year, would have made Maine the 22nd state to legalize online and in-person wagering on sports. The bill would…

Up Pops Washington State Sports Betting

One of the most adversarial states for gambling is looking to expand the activity. A Washington state sports betting bill has been approved by a House appropriations committee which would allow tribal casinos to offer wagers on sporting events. The committee voted 25-7 on Tuesday to send the bill to the full House for a vote before the session ends on March 13. The proposal would also have to pass the Senate and be signed by Gov. Jay Inslee. The House bill is sponsored by state Rep. Strom Peterson, D-Edmonds, who told The Seattle Times on Tuesday evening that he…
