West Virginia and Sports Betting ‘Integrity Fees’

The efforts of the sports leagues to get money for nothing could be paying off. The West Virginia sports betting bill, which will become effective if/when (when) the U.S. Supreme Court scraps that law that currently prevents states from adopting sports wagering, has been tweaked to provide for a so-called “integrity fee” aimed at compensating those who provide the sports on which bets are placed a piece of the action in exchange for, well, nothing. Via WVNews.com, a tentative agreement has been reached in West Virginia to pay the integrity fee. The funds will come not from the state’s cut…

New Jersey Legislators Oppose Sports Betting Integrity Fee

The US Supreme Court is expected to reveal its decision regarding the federal legalization of sports betting soon (and a possible integrity fee) and New Jersey wants to be ready in case that happens in the upcoming months. A top lawmaker in the state said that New Jersey will not provide integrity fee payments to major sports leagues in any bill that seeks the regulation of sports betting. Deputy Assembly Speaker John Burzichelli said: “That’s not going to happen. We’re supposed to sit down and write a check to the same people who have fought us every step of the…

Foxwoods & Mohegan Sun Threaten Slot Revenue Over Sports Betting

Connecticut’s two largest tribal casinos, Foxwoods & Mohegan Sun, are threatening to cut off slot machine revenue from their casino resorts if sports betting is authorized statewide. In a letter to House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz, D-Berlin, and other legislative leaders, the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes said a bill before the General Assembly to legalize sports betting would violate the compact between the tribes and the state. That means the state’s 25 percent take from slot revenue at the Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos — some $250 million a year — could be cut off unless a deal is struck…

Duh! Study Says Fantasy Sports Require Skill

A study led by a professor at Kansas State University has concluded that daily fantasy sports (DFS) is not a simple game of chance, but requires a great amount of skill. The study, which will be published in the Journal of Sports Science, urges Kansas legislators to not classify DFS as gambling. The decision could also spill over into other states that are looking into creating better definition of what is and what isn’t considered gambling. The study points out that, “Whether or not individuals in a state can participate in daily fantasy sports has a massive economic and societal…

New Jersey Sports Betting Bill Almost Ready

Sometime in the next two months, the Supreme Court will make a ruling on a landmark case which could open the door for a New Jersey sports betting bill, as well as other US states to legalize the activity within their borders. While the SCOTUS decision might not be as cut and dry as some sports betting proponents countrywide would like, a pair of New Jersey lawmakers are preparing for a reality where the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), the law banning sports wagering outside Nevada, is fully repealed. Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling and Assemblywoman Joann Downey recently introduced…
