Ladbrokes hits targets despite drop in operating profit
iGaming Business – Bookmaker Ladbrokes said that despite having suffered a year-on-year drop in group operating profit during the three months to March 31, 2014, it was still able to deliver all of its “stated operational targets” either on time or ahead of schedule. The company recorded operating profit of £18.4 million (€22.4 million/$30.9 million) in the first quarter of 2014, down from £37.4 million in the corresponding period last year. William Hill Announces Plans to Close 109 Betting Shops
British bookmaker William Hill is to close more than 100 betting shops this year, blaming the decision on a tax increase on high-stakes gambling machines that have become one of their main sources of revenue. The British government has announced that local councils are to be given more powers to decide whether more UK betting shops should open in their individual constituencies. William Hill hit by football results in first quarter
iGaming Business – UK bookmaker William Hill has cited two “substantial” loss-making weeks driven by football results as one of the main reasons for a year-on-year drop in profit during the three months to March 31, 2014. The company reported that operating profit for the first quarter was down 14% on the same period last year. Retail suffered the most with a 25% drop while online operations also fell 6%.
