UK Footballer Suspended for Match Betting

Tottenham winger Andros Townsend has received a four-month ban by the Football Association (FA) for match betting on football games. Townsend is not accused of wagering on matches he was a part of, but nevertheless found himself in hot water and fined £18K for breaching the FA’s player betting regulations.

Three months of the ban have been suspended until July 1st, 2016 and will be enforced if the footballer gets into any more trouble during that time-frame. An independent regulatory commission imposed the sanctions.

The promising 21 year old talent is expected to be available again for the start of the 2013-14 Barclays Premier League campaign. The violation cost him a chance to line up for England in the U21 Championship hosted in Israel. Birmingham player Nathan Redmond suited up instead.

Townsend has tweeted that he accepts his punishment and will not appeal the sanctions.
