Another Record for New Jersey Sportsbooks

This third consecutive month of huge results by sports betting and online gaming pushed the state past even more milestones, including a lifetime sports gambling handle of more than $20 billion! This according to the PlayNJ website, which tracks gaming developments in the state. Chicago Sports Betting to be Allowed at Stadiums

Good news for fans of Chicago sports betting! The City Council has at last voted to end their ban on sports bets! And that opens the door for sports book operators to set up shop at sports stadiums! The Sports Wagering Act of 2019 had provisions which would allow sports books to be located at stadiums within Illinois. The city of Chicago, however, was a different story. There a ban on sports betting had to be removed before any books even considered opening at a stadium. And now, that time has come! The Cubs of Major League Baseball have already…

Seminole Sports Betting Pulled Down Amid Lawsuit

We’ve been following Seminole sports betting in Florida for several weeks. Recently, a Federal District Judge ruled the agreement between the two to be ‘invalid’, as it violated the state constitution and the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. However, after the ruling the Tribe continued to accept online sports wagers. Initially, the Seminoles filed a “motion for stay pending appeal” with the Federal District Court while they continued to accept bets. However, the Judge in this case refused to grant them an appeal and rejected their argument that shutting down sports bets would cause the Tribe irreparably harm from the ‘loss…

How a 51% Tax Could Change Sports Betting

It’s difficult to believe that the CEO of a major sports betting operator would say something to alienate his existing and potential customers. Yet, that’s exactly what Jason Robins did while speaking on the Canaccord Genuity 2021 Digital Gaming Summit held virtually last week. Hello my friends! And welcome to This Week in Gambling, where we’re following an interesting bit of news. The CEO of…

While speaking at the Canaccord Genuity 2021 Digital Gaming Summit, Robins said he believes the 51% tax rate will not be a problem for the company. And we think we know why, as he plainly said that players who bet for profit are “not the kind of players” DraftKings wants. Now, let’s think about that statement for a moment. What Robins seems to be saying is that the exorbitant tax rate…

IGT Sues Justice Department Over Wire Act

In an effort to gain some clarity, IGT sues Justice Department over their refusal to commit on the Federal Wire Act. And yes, this feels like a never ending story.  Really, this is a good thing for our industry. Since the Department of Justice was shot down by a Federal Judge over their Wire Act opinion (and again on appeal) they have been very quiet. In fact, the DOJ has said nothing since their defeat. And that’s where the new lawsuit comes in. Since the online gambling business seems to be taking off in the United States (finally), and since…
