Sports Betting in Connecticut Approved

Sports betting in Connecticut, including online betting, has been approved and signed by the Governor… but now we must wait for approval by the Federal Government. But why is Federal approval needed? Because the deal involves the states Tribal Gaming interests. The Mohegan Sun, operated by the Mohegan Tribe, and Foxwoods Casino, operated by Mashantucket Pequot, have “exclusive rights” to many forms of gambling in the state. And since a deal needed to be reached between the state and the Tribes, now the Bureau of Indian Affairs must approve the expansion. One interesting aspect of this agreement is that online…

Nebraska Sports Betting and Gambling Expansion

Congratulations are in order as Nebraska sports betting has become the latest to join the regulated market! And while we are happy that betting on sports continues to expand, we cannot help but be a little disappointed that wagers will not be allowed online. Governor Pete Ricketts signed the legislation, which not only legalized betting on sports in the state, but also allowed for the expansion of casino gambling. Horse tracks in the state will now be permitted to offer “Las Vegas style” games, which we hope includes slots, craps, roulette, blackjack, and video poker. Initially, the Governor was opposed…

The Fight for Louisiana Sports Betting

There have been a lot of bills introduced for the regulation of Louisiana sports betting. Now, estimates are that the activity could be launched as early as this fall, perhaps in time for the NFL season. Senators in Louisiana recently voted 31-6 on a bill to allow sports bets to be placed on smartphones, in casinos, at approved kiosks, and even in restaurants that serve liquor. The bill must now go before the Louisiana House. A survey last year found that 65% of state residence approve of the regulation of sports wagers. Louisiana State Police Gaming Enforcement Division spokesperson Chuck…

Sports Betting in Tennessee Quickest to $1 Billion

Don’t look now, but sports betting in Tennessee has now collected more than $1 billion in wagers since the industry launched in November, even as wagers slowed down in April. Now with $1.1 billion in six months, the Volunteer State became the quickest legal sports jurisdiction to reach the $1 billion milestone in U.S. history, according to PlayTenn, which tracks the Tennessee gaming market. “With an online-only launch during the NFL season and at the beginning of a month, Tennessee kicked off its sports betting industry under nearly perfect circumstances,” said Nicole Russo, analyst for PlayTenn.com. “The circumstances gave the…

Florida Sports Betting Legalized

It took a special session and an agreement with the Seminole Tribe, but Florida sports betting has finally and officially been passed! It is the single largest expansion of gambling in the state… but don’t get too excited, yet. Residents of the state may have a bit of a wait before any actual sports wagering takes place. The agreement must also be approved by Federal regulators. The U.S. Department of Interior has just 45 days to review and approve the deal. The Florida House Speaker  added, “Congratulations on an historic compact with the Seminole Tribe…’’. And the Seminoles really are…

Massachusetts and Maryland Sports Betting Update

Gambling expansion continues across America with a Maryland sports betting bill that was signed into law by the Governor just this week. The state is now free to issue up to 60 licenses. In addition to land based betting on sports,  the state will also issue mobile sports betting license. Operators will be required to pay a 15% tax on revenue. Maryland sports betting was previously approved by voters who backed the measure in a referendum. Meanwhile in Massachusetts, state senators approved sports betting legislation which they included in their $47.6 billion budget. The situation is still a bit confusing,…
