The Department of Justice now considers online gambling and sports betting between the states illegal. However, with all the sports leagues, gambling companies and a growing number of state opposing them, they may have wandered into a legal minefield! The Department of Justice does not want to fight the online gambling lawsuit brought by the fifteen states defending their right to regulate Internet betting. Now the DOJ has made a proactive move to try to avoid having to defend their actions in court… and to keep states under their thumb. The Justice Department is now asking that the court throw out the lawsuit brought against them, using some creative legal maneuvering to try to wiggle off the hook. The era of professional leagues fighting the expansion of gambling seems to be over. Now, those same leagues who had so adamantly opposed betting on their games appear ready to cash in through sports betting deals. Instead of throwing up roadblocks to sports gambling, the leagues are now making deals to work with betting operators. Just two months after the Department of Justice announced it was changing it’s opinion on the Wire Act, 15 states and the District of Columbia are set to join the DOJ online gambling lawsuit Additionally, New Jersey is asking the court for a Declaratory Judgment that the Wire Act only applies to sports betting, not to online gambling or poker.
