French gaming revenue ahead of Italy and Spain

From iGaming Business – The French online gaming market generated €798m in gross gaming revenues in 2012, compared with €749m for Italy and €117m for Spain, which regulated its online gaming and betting market in June 2012, France’s igaming regulator ARJEL announced on Tuesday.

Each country has its own iGaming specificities, online poker and casino dominate the Italian industry, Spaniards favour online sportsbetting while in France, a third of the country’s GGRs comes from online horseracing parimutuel, reflecting the historical strength of the activity and the main operator PMU.

ARJEL also published the results of a survey of some 150,000 players to have taken part in regulated iGaming in the first six months of 2013. It found that between 1 January and 31 May:

– 37,7% played online poker only

– 19,6% took part in online sportsbetting only

– 17,1% took part in online horseracing parimutuel only

– 10,3% took part in online horseracing parimutuel online sportsbetting only

– 7,7% took part in online sportsbetting and online poker only

– 6% played all three regulated verticals

– 1,5% played online poker and horseracing parimutuel only

Overall, three quarters of the players surveyed (75%) took part in just one type of game, 85% of them took part in iGaming from a single account, while 11% of them used two customer accounts during the period. Just 4% of the respondents used a minimum of three customer accounts.
