Illegal Online Gambling On The Rise In Asia

The most recent bust in an Asian jurisdiction is an example of how the police are cracking down on the illegal internet wagering operations in Vietnam. Police from the Ministry of Public Security have arrested seven members of an online gambling ring with total gambling amount reaching US$23.6 million as of August.

The ring leader, Vuong Chan Thanh, is director of Vien Tin International Co Ltd in District 11, HCMC the thirty seven year old was arrested on Friday morning, with his wife, Dam Kim Khuyen, who is 34, and Nguyen Thanh Trieu, also 34, Vuong Thuy Hang Trieu’s wife, who is 35, and Do Tu Tuong again 35.

Colonel Ho Sy Tien, chief of the Social Crime Investigation Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security commented that ring utilized the internet domain 188bet.com which has been in existence since 2010 serving gambling cliental in other countries besides Vietnam. The server for the domain has been located in the Philippines since the year 2005.

The search of Thanh’s home and office revealed tens of thousands of US dollars, hundreds of millions of dong, many machines and equipment, and a lot of books of accounts related to gambling all of which were confiscated by the Police. Officials said, these books and other materials revealed that the total amount of money dealt through the gambling ring as of August 2013 amounted to VND500 billion or $23.6 million USD.
