Sports Betting Affect on IndyCar Racing

On September 1st of this year, betting on sports in Indiana will become legal. But residents should not expect to see betting kiosks unloaded at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for IndyCar Racing. The new legislation only licensed casinos, racinos and off-track betting facilities to open a sports book and accept bets.  So while legislation allows Hoosiers to bet on racing, venues where legal gambling doesn’t already take place won’t be taking wagers. “The law that passed, and it was obvious from the very beginning of the legislative process,” said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Co, which owns IMS and IndyCar,…

The Michigan Online Gambling Standoff

Internet slot games could be a sacrificial lamb in the battle for Michigan online gambling… slaughtered for the “greater good” of the state’s online gambling bill. Speaking to the Online Poker Report website, State Representative Brandt Iden said that Governor Gretchen Whitmer refuses to compromise when it comes to Internet gambling and eliminating online slots from the package. “I’d love to have a direct conversation with her about this,” Iden said. “She refuses to engage with me directly. I’ve been talking to her staff. I welcome the opportunity, for the record, to sit down with the governor any time and…

Half in US Will Soon Live With Legal Sports Betting

On June 14, 2018, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy started the legal sports betting industry in the state with a $20 wager on Germany to win last year’s World Cup, and the New Jersey Devils to hoist the 2019 Stanley Cup. Murphy would eventually lose both wagers (France/St. Louis Blues), but less than a year later he and his state hit a lucrative, historic jackpot. Since the unanimous SCOTUS decision on May 14, 2018, to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), a 1992 federal law that had essentially restricted single-game sports betting to Nevada and its famed…

North Carolina Sports Betting Discussion

State lawmakers continue to move forward a bill that would allow North Carolina sports betting on tribal land, but no where else in the rest of the state. The legislation will likely get a hearing on the House floor in the coming days after passing a final committee Wednesday. On Tuesday, the House Commerce Committee gave its approval to the bill, which would also allow horse wagering on tribal casino land. The bill passed on a voice vote with two audible dissenting votes — Rep. Keith Kidwell, R-Beaufort, and Frank Iler, R-Brunswick. It now awaits a hearing in the House…
