Senior Citizens Arrested in Gambling Ring

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department busted an illegal gambling ring at a home on the 1200 block E. 15th Street. Detectives arrested and charged 10 people for their involvement in the illegal activity including an 83-year-old man.

Detectives also confiscated a little over $4,400 in cash. Officers removed pull tab machines, 13 brown boxes, and some suspected cocaine. Investigators served a search warrant on the home on Tuesday. All of the suspects were transported to the Marion County Jail, except for 64-year-old Judy Buckner, who officers sent to Wishard Memorial Hospital for high blood pressure.

Prosecutors have charged the suspects with professional gambling. According to IMPD, there are several gambling houses in our city, but the gambling ring illegal activity runs mostly out of vacant homes. “These are non-tax dollars it is illegal money,” said IMPD Spokesman Kendale Adams.

It’s estimated some of the illegal activities can bring in $10,000 a day or even $2 million a year. There are several legal logistics in order to close one of the homes which include police, fire, and code enforcement. Police conducted two raids on the home in the past two months. 24-Hour News 8 went back to the home in question. Once on the scene there were several cars in parking beside the home. Within minutes those in the home got into their vehicles and left the scene.

Those arrested include 39-year-old Cherron Coleman, 47-year-old Tracey Jones, 49-year-old Felicia Pettigrew, 53-year-old Andrew Laury, 63-year-old Sam Byrd, 64-year-old Judy Buckner,  65-year-old Walter Meredith, 75-year-old John Walton, 78-year-old Eddie Callaway, 83-year-old Calvin Butts.
