Atlantic City Casinos Back to Pre-Pandemic Earnings

A glimmer of hope in a mostly dim economic outlook finds Atlantic City casinos have joined the gambling revenue party. Even as the threat of recession looms on the horizon, profits for the East Coast gambling mecca hit over $440 million for April, which is the highest since early 2019. The numbers were published by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement and show that despite the continued explosion of sports betting across America, it’s been the Atlantic City casinos that have generated to most profit. Gamblers have been returning to casinos in droves to make bets in person, even…

Atlantic City Casinos Revenue Rises Nearly 30%

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement has published revenue figures for Atlantic City Casinos in the month of February. The numbers show that the nine operators in the market were able to take in over $210 million in profit, which is a significant gain from last year. Better weather and the waning of the pandemic have contributed, of course, with revenue this year reaching over $395 million to date. That represents a 28.5% growth from the same time in 2021, when the numbers reached barely over $305 million. A large portion of this revenue  was from foot traffic to…

Atlantic City Casinos Cleared for Full Occupancy

For the first time since March of last year, Atlantic City casinos have been cleared to open at full capacity starting tomorrow, May 19th. The change comes just two months after they opened at 50% occupancy. However, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has chosen to keep the mask requirement in place indoors, and the six-foot social distancing rule will also remain in effect. “Now is the time to take major steps to reopen our economy and loosen both indoor and outdoor gathering and capacity restrictions,” he said. The Governor’s decision to open up the casinos comes as the summer tourism…

Atlantic City Casinos Set for July 2nd Open

Nearly one month after Las Vegas welcomed guests back, Atlantic City casinos are set to open their doors in time for Independence Day weekend. There is one big catch, however: The properties must operate at 25% occupancy. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said casino patrons must wear face masks and undergo some level of health screening. “If any visitor refuses to comply with these simple safeguards, you will be escorted out of the casino,” the governor said. “We are not going to tolerate any knuckleheads trying to ruin it for those who want to enjoy themselves responsibly and those who…

Atlantic City Casinos Could Get State Tax Relief

The New Jersey Senate has voted to provide interest-free loans to Atlantic City casinos that made their required payments in lieu of taxes during the Coronavirus pandemic. State casinos have been closed since March to slow the spread of COVID-19 in New Jersey. Governor Phil Murphy has said he hopes to allow them to reopen by July 4th. The legislation permanently expands the tax deductions casinos can take for promotional gaming credits and reduces the tax liability for one year on gross revenue if a casino suffered revenue losses on its brick-and-mortar operations during the pandemic. Casinos also would be…

Atlantic City Casinos Not Ready to Reopen

Even as rumors circulate that Las Vegas could turn the lights back on at casinos June 1st, Atlantic City casinos will remain dark for a bit longer. While some businesses in New Jersey start to reopen, Governor Phil Murphy said that he still doesn’t have a date for when casinos in the Garden State will be able to follow. Asked whether it will be weeks rather than months to see them operating again, Murphy said: “I don’t want to marry myself… I hope it’s that,” he said. Some casinos are still accepting hotel reservations, especially as beaches reopen for the…
