MGM Adds Second Online Casino for New Jersey
MGM Resorts has officially launched its second internet casino in New Jersey, this one, called playMGM. The Las Vegas-based company’s new online destination in New Jersey will be offering poker and casino games under the more globally recognized MGM banner, and will also incorporate play into their rewards program. It all comes at a time when online gambling revenues are at an all-time high in the Garden State. MGM already operates Borgata.com, an online poker and casino site in New Jersey attached to its brick-and-mortar Atlantic City casino, the Borgata. That site will remain active despite the company’s launch of…
New Jersey Wants Cross-Border Poker Compacts
In an interview with Roger Gros, the publisher of Global Gaming Business, New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement Director David Rebuck discussed a number of topics affecting the state’s gambling industry in a podcast. The interview hinted at the possibility of compacting for online poker with other states. A compact with the UK, however, is out the window. Here’s a look at the highlights from the interview that occurred in June: When asked if the Atlantic City casino industry was right-sized at seven casinos, and whether there was room for a Hard Rock casino in AC (which is slated to…
New Jersey Fantasy Sports Would Not be Regulated as Gambling
The clock is now ticking on Gov. Chris Christie officially signing A3532, a bill regulating daily fantasy sports (DFS) that was passed by the New Jersey Senate on Friday, June 30. The measure, which sailed through the chamber by a comfortable 29-6 margin, would tax DFS operators at a rate of 10.5 percent of gross revenues each quarter. Initial estimates are that the bill would net the Garden State approximately $6.6 million per year. If passed, the bill would classify DFS as a non-gambling game of skill, which means that its oversight would not fall to the Division of Gaming…
Could New Jersey Sports Betting Hurt Las Vegas?
The law of unintended consequences could apply to the New Jersey sports betting case. Many are focused on the prospect of the US Supreme Court ruling in favor of the state in its quest to offer legal sports betting within its borders. That could open the possibility of states around the country changing their laws to offer sports betting, if the court rules that PASPA is unconstitutional. PASPA is the law that bans almost all forms of sports wagering, outside of Nevada. But there’s a flipside to that possibility: Namely, SCOTUS could rule that PASPA is unconstitutional and shut down…
New Jersey Tells Trump: Hands Off Online Gambling
The New Jersey Legislature has spoken. It wants the federal government to keep its hands off online gambling. Both chambers of the New Jersey legislature passed resolution urging President Trump, his administration, and Congress to “oppose measures and actions to prohibit states from authorizing and conducting Internet gaming.” Rep. Vincent Mazzeo introduced the resolution back on Jan. 23. A month later, Sen. Jim Whelan and Sen. Jennifer Beck introduced companion legislation. The legislature then rolled the two resolutions into a single measure. This isn’t the first resolution calling on the federal government to leave state-level online gambling well enough alone…
Supreme Court in Limbo Over New Jersey Sports Betting
Monday was expected to be the day the U.S. Supreme Court would announce whether it will hear New Jersey’s years-long effort to legalize sports betting at casinos and racetracks. But a decision never came, either for or against the state. Now, experts say, the nation’s highest court could make an announcement Tuesday — though even that is uncertain. “This is the Groundhog Day of sports betting,” joked Daniel Wallach, a gaming and sports law attorney with Becker & Poliakoff in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Set to take a summer recess, the Supreme Court discussed the case in a “cleanup conference” on…
