New Jersey Sports Betting May be Dead… Forever

New Jersey’s efforts to bring legal sports betting to its horse tracks and Atlantic City casinos suffered another significant — and potentially fatal — setback on Tuesday when a federal appeals court upheld a previous ruling invalidating a challenge to a federal law that limits such gambling to four states. Following a rare hearing in February before a 12-judge panel from the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the judges ruled 10-2 in favor of five sports organizations, including the NFL and the NCAA. The leagues had argued that a 2014 state law ran afoul of the 1992 federal law,…

AGA Says Congress Must Act on Sports Betting Ban

Congressional action appears necessary if sports betting is to be legalized in Atlantic City casinos and elsewhere across the U.S. That’s the conclusion of American Gaming Association President Geoff Freeman following this week’s rejection of New Jersey’s effort to get  a court-ordered change in the 1992 act of Congress that banned most forms of sports betting. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling invalidated a 2014  New Jersey law that would have allowed sports betting at casinos and racetracks. The court found New Jersey’s action repealing prohibitions against sports gambling violated the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA)…..

New Jersey Sports Betting will Not Happen

New Jersey will not be able to offer sports betting after its appeal against a previous ruling failed. The United States Court of Appeals decided by a majority of 10-2 that a law passed by New Jersey in 2014 that would have allowed sports betting at its casinos and racetracks did not comply with the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) which prohibits states from authorising, sponsoring, operating or licensing sports betting. The sports betting bill was first approved by New Jersey voters in 2011, with the country’s four major professional sports leagues beginning legal action against the…

Lawmakers in New Jersey have agreed a deal to send financial support to the US state’s gambling resort of Atlantic City, following a sharp drop in casino revenue during recent years. Total casino revenue in the resort for the 12 months to December 31, 2015, came in at $2.2 billion (€2 billion), down from $5.2 billion in 2006, partially due to the closure of four of its 12 casinos in 2014. With some analysts predicting that revenue will fall again this year, the state has agreed to step in by approving a measure to extend bridge loans and grants to…

At the Friday May 13 meeting of the Nevada Gaming Policy Committee, Governor Brian Sandoval said that he was willing to sign an interstate compact to share online poker liquidity with New Jersey immediately. “I’m ready to go,” said the governor, adding, “It’s a win-win for both states.” The governor was immediately backed by A.G. Burnett, the chairman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Burnett said that he was “ready, willing and able” to sign an interstate agreement with New Jersey.
