Was Goal Line Technology Successful for Soccer?

For many years the FIFA President Joseph “Sepp” Blatter was very much against the goal line technology. His position was that it will remove the human factor from soccer and it’s going to kill a bit of the fun in the game. In order to please the fans and the teams, two new referees were introduced in the campaign “Now We See More” one on each out line.

The effect? Not much difference when it comes to proper referee decision on debatable situations. Finally, during the group stage of Euro 2012, when Ukraine scored a goal to England, but neither the 5th nor the sideline referee saw it Blatter was forced to change his position and push for the goal technology.

This season the English Premier League became the first league to use this innovation and so far the feedback is great. In fact during some of the games this season, we have already seen the system being used to identify whether there was a goal or not.

The future for the system? Usage in the upcoming World Cup 2014 in Brazil, and introduction in the other major European leagues like the Spanish La Liga and the German Bundesliga. Pretty soon every league is going to be using the goal line technology in order to prevent non-existent goals or goals that were regular but were discarded by the referees.
