Major Setback for New Jersey Sports Betting Challenge

Advocates of expanded sports betting suffered a setback yesterday when the acting Solicitor General recommended that the Supreme Court decline to hear New Jersey’s appeal in its challenge to the federal government. The recommendation substantially diminishes the odds that the high court will agree to hear the case, but the decision will only further ramp up pressure on sports leagues to address the issue and build momentum for a legislative solution, a panel of experts told the East Coast Gaming Congress in Atlantic City on Wednesday. “I think the expectation was that the Justice Department would say ‘No you should…

Talk of New Jersey – New York – Pennsylvania Online Poker Pact

At present, playing legal online poker on a regulated New Jersey site can be a frustrating ordeal. Games do not run round the clock, tournament guarantees are on the low side (and dipping), and low-to-mid stakes No Limit Hold’em games dominate cash game lobbies. But with online poker at the forefront of the legislative conversation in both New York and Pennsylvania, that could change in relatively swift fashion. PokerStars Fine of $25,000 Issued by New Jersey Regulator

New Jersey online gambling regulators have issued a PokerStars fine of $25k for failing to ensure that out-of-state players couldn’t play on PokerStars New Jersey site. The fine was issued to Canada’s Amaya Gaming, who own PokerStars. On Wednesday, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) published a January 20 decision detailing how a “software flaw” enabled out-of-state patrons to gamble at PokerStarsNJ.com, in violation of the DGE’s strict intrastate gambling rules. The DGE said its investigation had revealed that “a limited number” of patrons had been allowed to wager while outside New Jersey’s borders “for a short period…

New Jersey Closing in on Fantasy Sports Regulation

New Jersey has taken a step closer to legalising daily fantasy sports (DFS) after a state Assembly committee cleared a bill that would regulate the industry. The proposed legislation sets out rules to charge DFS companies a fee of 10.5% on gross revenue in order to legally operate in the US state. Although the exact amount that the state would collect under this structure is unclear, the NorthJersey.com website said Chris Grimm, a consultant for DFS firms DraftKings and FanDuel, estimated the figure at approximately $1 million (€933,532) each year.
