North Carolina Sports Betting Discussion
State lawmakers continue to move forward a bill that would allow North Carolina sports betting on tribal land, but no where else in the rest of the state. The legislation will likely get a hearing on the House floor in the coming days after passing a final committee Wednesday. On Tuesday, the House Commerce Committee gave its approval to the bill, which would also allow horse wagering on tribal casino land. The bill passed on a voice vote with two audible dissenting votes — Rep. Keith Kidwell, R-Beaufort, and Frank Iler, R-Brunswick. It now awaits a hearing in the House…
Baseball Players Freak Out Over Sports Betting
Executives and players across professional sports in America have been watching the expansion of gambling with concern… and Major League Baseball is no exception. In March, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed his preference for a federal regulation of sports betting rather than the state-by-state approach, and said he views sports betting as a “great source of fan engagement’’ and “a positive’’ to his sport “in general.’’ “I’m a realist,” Manfred said, via BizJournals.com. “Would I prefer to have a single integrated structure from the federal government? Yes, because it would be easier for us to deal with one set of…
New York Sports Bets Live
This week, New York sports bets became official as they joined an ever increasing list of states allowing allowing the activity. New York’s regulation of the activity comes more than a year after the U.S. Supreme Court lifted the ban that had restricted sports betting outside of Nevada. Gambling officials and casino executives in New York are eager to catch up to New Jersey, where gamblers have placed more than $3 billion worth of sports bets in the first full year since wagering became legal in that state. “Right now, Jersey is cleaning our clock when it comes to sports…
Iowa Sports Betting Public Hearing
The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission held a public hearing Thursday to discuss its proposed regulations to govern Iowa sports betting. Sources told Legal Sports Report the meeting went largely without issue, an unsurprising case given regulations that closely mirror Iowa’s recently passed sports betting law. As nearby Indiana pushes toward a September 1 launch to open before the start of the NFL season, Iowa hopes to do the same. Retail sports wagering clearly can be ready sooner but the law allows for statewide mobile Iowa sports betting as well. The draft regulations largely codify what’s already laid out in…
AGA Warns of Sports Betting Industry “Critical Year”
The fledgling American sports betting industry faces a critical second year ahead, as more and more states pass sports betting laws. The President and CEO of the American Gaming Association, Bill Miller, says it has expanded to more than $3 billion in total bets in the year since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a federal ban on the activity. Now, in an interview with the Las Vegas Sun, Miller said the AGA will focus on ensuring that emerging markets install proper regulations and practices. “The Supreme Court decision to overturn PASPA was a transformative moment for the gaming industry. It…
New Hampshire Sports Betting Signed Into Law
New Hampshire sports betting became official, as Governor Chris Sununu signed the legislation sent to him a few weeks ago. Now, he said that he’s eager to place the first bet. The new law regulates betting on professional sports and most Division I college sports, excluding games involving New Hampshire schools. Mobile betting as well as retail gambling at 10 locations will be allowed, though it will take some time to set up. The wagering is expected to produce an estimated $7.5 million for education in fiscal year 2021 and $13.5 million two years later. The state Lottery Commission will…
