Betting on Sports in Maine Put on Hold

Governor Janet Mills has declined to act on legislation that would allow betting on sports in Maine. Her office said Wednesday that the governor would have three days to sign or veto the sports betting bill once lawmakers return in January of next year. “The Legislature has passed a significant number of bills this session, and I take seriously my constitutional obligation to thoroughly review all of them, evaluate their implications and decide whether they are in the best interest of Maine people,” Mills said in a statement. “I will continue to review these bills and gather more information, and…

Betting on Sports in Illinois Not Ready by NFL Season

State residents hoping to place a wager on the Bears game will be disappointed to hear that betting on sports in Illinois this year is almost certainly not possible. In fact, legal sports bets probably won’t be available until the Super Bowl in February. This according to state Rep. Mike Zalewski, one of the architects of the state gambling expansion signed last week. In the meantime, brick-and-mortar gambling establishments will be partnering up with sports wagering companies to design in-house sports books, Zalewski said. Casinos and horse racing tracks will be able to offer slot machines and other games of chance, and can apply for the $10 million sports betting licenses. However, online sports betting giants will be stuck in the “penalty box” for the first 18 months, effectively…

California Sports Betting Measure on 2020 Ballot

Don’t hold your breath, but lawmakers have introduced another California sports betting bill. The last one didn’t go so well, but a recent change in the state’s gambling landscape presents a fresh stage for 2019. The bill’s introduction comes in the wake of a failed private attempt to garner signatures in support of a referendum. This proposal, however, would be subject to two-thirds approval from the legislature before a majority vote at the ballot box in November 2020. Since the bill has not yet been filed there’s not much to work with so far. What is clear is that lawmakers have…
